The journey begins with a drive from Tirana to the northern city of Shkoder, one of the oldest and most historic urban centers in Albania. Shkodra, once the capital of the Illyrians during the 3rd and 2nd centuries B.C., holds a rich legacy that is immediately felt upon visiting the imposing Rozafa Castle. Perched on a hilltop, the fortress offers a commanding view over the surrounding landscape, including the rivers Buna and Drin, Lake Shkoder, and the distant mountains. The castle is a testament to the strength and strategic vision of the Illyrians. After taking in the sweeping panoramas, we explore the charming pedestrian zone of “Gjuhadol,” recently restored to highlight its Italian and Austrian architectural influence, which reflects the city’s strong historical ties with both nations. For those interested, an optional visit to the Marubi National Museum of Photography is available. This museum houses an extraordinary archive of more than 500,000 glass negatives, capturing the people, customs, and moments of everyday life in the region since 1856—the year the first photograph in the Balkans was taken.
Our tour then takes us to Lezhe, where we stop to visit the mausoleum of Skanderbeg, Albania’s revered national hero, who was laid to rest in the Church of Saint Nicholas. From there, we continue to Kruja, a city symbolic of Albania’s resistance against the Ottoman Empire. Kruja was the stronghold of Skanderbeg, who successfully defended the region from Ottoman invasion for 25 years, earning the title “Athleta Christi” from the Pope. In Kruja, we will explore the Skanderbeg Museum, which chronicles his legacy, and the Ethnographic Museum, offering a fascinating insight into Albanian life in the 19th century through authentic exhibits. The visit concludes with a walk through Kruja’s famed bazaar, known for its traditional crafts and vibrant atmosphere. The tour ends with a return to Tirana, bringing with it a deeper appreciation for Albania’s complex history, cultural resilience, and national pride.
