About this activity

Tortuguero National Park, located in the Limón Province of northeastern Costa Rica, is one of the country's most ecologically diverse and captivating destinations. Accessible only by boat or plane, this remote park is the third-most visited in the country, attracting nature lovers and eco-tourists from around the world. The park’s rich biodiversity is supported by its unique array of ecosystems, which include tropical rainforests, mangrove swamps, beaches, freshwater creeks, and coastal lagoons. With eleven distinct habitats spread across the park, visitors have the opportunity to witness a stunning variety of wildlife in their natural environments, from colorful birds and reptiles to monkeys and manatees. The area is also famous for being a critical nesting ground for sea turtles, particularly the endangered green turtle.

Due to its ecological significance, Tortuguero National Park was designated a Ramsar site in 1991, acknowledging its importance as a wetland of international importance. The park sits within the northeastern Caribbean wetlands and connects with Nicaragua’s Indio Maíz Biological Reserve, forming an essential cross-border conservation corridor. This linkage helps sustain migratory patterns and preserve genetic diversity among species that depend on both ecosystems. With a tropical and extremely humid climate, the park receives up to 250 inches (6,400 mm) of rainfall annually, creating lush and dense vegetation. Its protected status ensures the conservation of its fragile habitats and the rare and threatened flora and fauna that call it home.
