One of our most popular adventures, the Sani Pass and Lesotho 4x4 Day Tour begins with a departure from Durban and heads to Pietermaritzburg, the capital of KwaZulu-Natal. There, your guide will give you a brief city tour and a visit to the Mahatma Gandhi statue located near the historic City Hall—an important site linked to Gandhi’s early activism in South Africa. The journey then continues toward the majestic Drakensberg Mountains, leading to the start of the legendary Sani Pass. A valid passport is required for this journey, as the route crosses the international border between South Africa and Lesotho.
The Sani Pass itself is a dramatic 33-kilometre gravel road that zigzags along steep cliffs and the edge of the Drakensberg escarpment. Travelling in a 4x4 Land Rover, you'll ascend from the Sani Pass Hotel at 1,566 meters above sea level to the South African/Lesotho border post at 1,968 meters, eventually reaching a height of 3,240 meters (9,900 feet) at the top. Along the way, enjoy breathtaking views of KwaZulu-Natal’s vast landscapes. At the summit, you’ll visit the iconic “Highest Pub in Africa” for a warm meal and soak in the panoramic scenery. A stop at a local Basotho village offers a unique cultural experience, where you’ll meet locals and learn about the traditional lifestyle of the Basotho people. After this enriching encounter, the tour descends back down the pass and returns to Durban, completing a day filled with stunning natural beauty and cultural immersion.
