Ratu Crater, or Kawah Ratu, is the largest and youngest crater in the Cikuluwung Putri crater complex, formed as a result of a previous eruption of Mount Salak. It is part of a broader volcanic system that also includes the Paeh Crater and Hirup Crater—now referred to as Paeh II Crater as recorded in 1951. Situated on the western slopes of Mount Salak, Ratu Crater falls under the management of the Directorate General of Forest Protection and Nature Conservation, within the Ministry of Forestry, and is directly overseen by the Gunung Halimun Salak National Park Office. This region is a significant geological site due to its dynamic volcanic features and active geothermal activity, drawing hikers, geologists, and adventure seekers alike for both scientific study and recreational trekking.
The entire Cikuluwung Putri crater complex is classified as a solfatara field, an area known for its constant emissions of volcanic gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and water vapor (H2O). A solfatara is easily identified by the strong, pungent smell of sulfur oxides in the air—a natural result of volcanic gas release. These gases, while a fascinating display of volcanic activity, can pose health risks to humans and animals when present in high concentrations, particularly due to the presence of sulfur. Despite the potentially hazardous conditions, the site offers an extraordinary glimpse into Indonesia's volcanic landscape and geothermal phenomena, making Kawah Ratu a powerful reminder of nature’s raw energy and a captivating destination for those eager to explore the untamed beauty of West Java.
