Your day begins with a pickup from your centrally located Urumqi hotel, followed by a transfer to the airport for a 1.5-hour flight to Kashgar, a vibrant city on the western edge of China steeped in Silk Road history. Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by a local guide and begin your journey with a visit to the Apa Hoja Mausoleum, an iconic Uyghur architectural site built in 1640. Originally constructed by a local Imam for his father, it later became the family tomb housing 72 members across five generations. The site’s striking blue tiles, domed roof, and elegant minarets make it one of Kashgar’s most admired landmarks. From there, you’ll head to the historic Kashgar Old Town, a fascinating labyrinth of narrow lanes lined with traditional houses that have been converted into shops, workshops, bakeries, and teahouses. Here, the cultural essence of centuries-old Uyghur life still thrives. A highlight is Handicraft Street, where you’ll find artisans creating intricate musical instruments and bronze vessels. You may also sample local snacks like Nang bread, grilled eggs, and dried fruits before visiting the renowned Id Ghar Mosque. As the largest mosque in Xinjiang, it offers a glimpse into Islamic architecture and religious culture—visits are allowed during non-prayer times, with modest dress required.
Lunch is a cultural experience in itself, arranged at a local Uyghur family home, where you’ll enjoy traditional dishes such as hand-stretched noodles, pilau, and freshly baked nang bread. In the afternoon, your exploration continues at the Grand Bazaar, one of the most famous and colorful markets in Central Asia. Known for its variety and vibrancy, the market comes alive especially in the afternoon, when farmers from the surrounding countryside arrive to shop and trade. As the local saying goes, you can find everything here except your parents. The bazaar is open daily, but it becomes especially lively on Sundays, which is also when the Animal Bazaar takes place near Kashgar Airport. If your visit coincides with Sunday, you’ll also explore this unique livestock market, where animals are traded in a bustling open-air setting. After a full day of cultural discovery and immersive experiences, you’ll be transferred back to your hotel in Kashgar to conclude your tour.
