Located just 1.5 km from the center of Hekal village, the ancient city of Bylis was founded in the early 4th century BC and quickly rose to prominence with the construction of key monuments, including a massive 2.2 km long wall that reached up to 9 meters in height and enclosed an area of 30 hectares. Bylis is considered the most significant representation of Illyrian civilization, serving as the capital of the Bylin community, which included cities like Nikaja (modern-day Klos), Margëllić, Gurzezë, and numerous ancient fortresses and villages. During the 2nd and 1st centuries BC, the city minted its own coins, underscoring its political and economic importance.
In the Roman and Late Antiquity periods, Bylis evolved further, becoming a Roman colony adorned with new structures such as baths, the Altar of Augustus, and various Roman houses. It later became a major episcopal center after the last bishop of Apollonia relocated there. A new defensive wall was constructed, enclosing a smaller area of 10 hectares. The city's most outstanding features from this time are its five basilicas, one of which is part of an episcopal complex. These basilicas are some of the richest in the Balkans, especially notable for their 1000 m² of mosaic floors and intricately carved decorations. Additional discoveries from this era include wine and oil factories and residential structures. Bylis was ultimately destroyed by barbarian invasions in 586 AD, but today it remains a key archaeological site in Albania, showcasing 21 well-preserved monuments from the Hellenistic, Roman, and Late Antiquity periods.
