Apollonia, founded in 588 BC near the Vjosa River by Greek colonists from Corfu and Corinth, quickly grew into a vibrant and prosperous city. It coexisted with the native Illyrian Taulantii tribe, and was one of thirty cities established in honor of Apollo, the god of sun, poetry, and music. Due to its strategic position and active port, Apollonia flourished through trade, able to accommodate up to 100 ships at a time. However, its prosperity was cut short by a devastating earthquake that led to its gradual abandonment. Today, Apollonia stands as one of Albania’s most significant archaeological sites, attracting cultural tourists from around the world and offering a glimpse into ancient life while contributing to the local economy.
Departing from Fier at 9:00 AM, visitors reach Apollonia within 20 minutes and are welcomed by a local guide. Walking through the site, one is immediately immersed in a peaceful natural setting and the remnants of a once-glorious city. Cicero, who once visited Apollonia, noted its population of 60,000. With the guide's help, visitors can identify well-preserved ruins such as the Hellenistic theatre, triumphal arch, colonnaded agora, gymnasium, Odeon, temple (Bouleuterion), and the monument of Agonothetes. Other notable features include the ancient library and several mosaic-decorated villas. Importantly, Apollonia also served as an educational center, where the future Roman Emperor Augustus studied in 47 BC, further cementing its historic and cultural importance.
