Located 12 km from Fier and the sea, Apollonia is one of Albania’s most visited archaeological sites. Founded in 588 BC by Greek colonists from Corfu and Corinth, it thrived as a rich port city where Greek and Illyrian cultures mingled. Named after Apollo, the god of sun, poetry, and music, Apollonia grew prosperous through trade until an earthquake led to its decline. Today, its impressive ruins—such as the Hellenistic theater, triumphal arch, agora, and mosaic villas—draw many visitors. The city also played a key role in Roman history as the training place of Emperor Augustus.
After exploring Apollonia, the tour continues to Bylis, another significant ancient city located near Ballsh. Founded in the 4th century BC, Bylis was a powerful Illyrian center with impressive walls, Roman baths, basilicas, and rich mosaics. It flourished through Roman times and late antiquity before being destroyed by barbarian invasions.
The final stop is Ardenica Monastery, built in 1282. This sacred site features the Church of Saint Mary, the Chapel of the Holy Trinity, peaceful gardens, and historic murals. It is famously known as the wedding place of Albanian hero Skanderbeg in 1451.
