This tour invites you to explore one of Albania’s most pristine natural environments along the Ionian Sea, situated at the eastern edge of the Otranto Channel within the heart of the Bay of Vlora. You will visit the Karaburun Marine Protected Area, a natural park established in 2010 to safeguard the unique biodiversity and landscapes of this remarkable peninsula. The journey begins early in the morning from Vlora by boat to the famous Haxhi Ali Pirate’s Cave, located at the tip of the Karaburun Peninsula. The cave, a cubic-shaped cavern extending 30 meters long, 12 meters wide, and 18 meters high, offers a breathtaking view of ancient rock formations and stalactites shaped by water erosion over millennia. A freshwater spring lies at the end of the cave, adding to its mystique. After a guided tour of about half an hour, guests have the choice to snorkel in the crystal-clear, vibrant waters around the cave or relax with a refreshing drink onboard the boat.
Following this, the adventure continues along the wild coastline of Karaburun, where you will get close to some of the peninsula’s most beautiful beaches and caves, including Shen Jani, Aquamarina, and San Basil. After a lunch break at Zhanpovel Beach, featuring local gastronomic specialties, the tour returns by crossing the bay along the Vlora coast, passing the cave beaches of Zhironi and Kalasa, and skirting the Cold Water district. The legendary story behind Haxhi Ali Cave honors the 16th-century pirate Haxhi Alia Ulqinaku, who was born in Calabria in 1569 and later moved to Ulcinj, Albania. Educated in the Ottoman military, he eventually settled in the Karaburun Peninsula, where he protected the coast from Venetian and French incursions. His heroic defense against a powerful Venetian and British fleet in 1623 earned him legendary status, with local songs still celebrating his bravery and legacy among the Karaburun people.
