There’s truly no better way to experience the untouched wilderness of Arctic Lapland than through an evening backcountry skiing adventure. With a professional guide leading the way, you'll leave behind the city lights of Rovaniemi and journey deep into the pristine Taiga forest, where nature remains pure and undisturbed. As this tour takes place away from urban areas, it also offers a fantastic opportunity to witness the magical Northern Lights, should they appear in the night sky. Even if the auroras remain hidden, the peaceful beauty of skiing through snow-covered landscapes under the stars is a remarkable experience in itself.
Backcountry skiing is a fun and accessible winter activity that allows you to venture into the wilderness with ease. Unlike alpine or cross-country skiing that relies on groomed trails and special equipment, backcountry skis come with skins on the bottom, enabling you to glide smoothly over deep snow and even go uphill at a controlled pace. The gear is beginner-friendly, requiring little practice to master, and your guide will provide all necessary instructions to help you feel comfortable and confident. During the tour, the guide will carefully choose a route that suits the skill level of the group while also maximizing the chance to view the auroras, if conditions permit.
Halfway through the tour, you’ll pause at a cozy campfire where your guide will prepare a traditional Finnish snack and warm drinks to keep your energy up and body warm. This break is a perfect time to relax, ask questions, and hear stories about the Northern Lights, Arctic wildlife, and local culture. The total tour lasts around 3 hours and 30 minutes, including transportation from and back to Rovaniemi and approximately 90–120 minutes of skiing. The experience runs in all weather conditions, ensuring a memorable outing whether or not the auroras make an appearance. With a small group size capped at 8 people, the tour offers a personalized and intimate way to connect with nature—because in Lapland, smaller groups always lead to bigger adventures.
