Right in front of the picturesque town of Pylos lies Navarino Bay, a serene natural harbor protected by the island of Sphacteria. This island acts as a wave breaker, safeguarding the bay from the open Ionian Sea, creating calm and ideal waters for sea kayaking. The bay itself is a stunning location, surrounded by an impressive landscape, golden sandy beaches, and crystal-clear waters. Sea turtles often visit the bay to lay their eggs, adding to the area’s natural charm. With two medieval castles guarding the bay, this area also holds historical significance, recalling the famous Battle of Navarino, one of the most pivotal events in modern Greek history.
Our adventure begins at Divari Beach, just a short distance from the charming village of Gialova. Upon arrival, your guide will provide a briefing on paddling techniques, safety measures, and kayaking equipment to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Once ready, we’ll hop on our kayaks and begin exploring Navarino Bay from the water, taking in the views of the town of Pylos and the imposing Niokastro fort. As we paddle toward the southern side of the bay, we’ll encounter the monolithic islet, home to a stunning natural stone arch. This islet also serves as a nesting and resting place for many species of birds. Weather permitting, we’ll circumnavigate the islet and explore its sea caves, tunnels, and arches, further immersing ourselves in the bay’s natural beauty.
The next stop on our journey takes us to the uninhabited island of Sphacteria, where we’ll stretch our legs and walk to the island’s viewpoint. From here, you can capture the breathtaking landscape with your camera and enjoy a story-telling moment amidst the serene surroundings. After some more kayaking, we’ll head to a secluded beach where you can swim, snorkel, and even try cliff diving for those who are feeling adventurous. To recharge, we’ll enjoy a homemade picnic featuring local delicacies, followed by time to relax under the sun. After this energizing stop, we’ll paddle back to the starting point, completing an unforgettable day surrounded by the tranquility of Navarino Bay.
