Climbing the Royal Mile, we arrive at Edinburgh Castle’s esplanade, where we can admire stunning views of the city. As Edinburgh grew in significance throughout Scottish history, the castle expanded and became a central site for events that shaped the United Kingdom. Scotland’s most visited monument, it holds the legacy of the Celts, Romans, Robert the Bruce, William Wallace, and Mary Stuart. The castle is also home to the Honors of Scotland and the legendary Stone of Destiny, and its museums provide a glimpse into the military history of both Scotland and the United Kingdom.
The castle stands proudly atop the crater of an ancient volcano, with city life beginning to develop around it around 900 BC. By 600 AD, the first fortress was established, evolving from wood to stone to become a royal refuge and a key target for the English. After the 1745 Jacobite siege, the castle ceased its military function and became a national symbol, attracting over a million visitors each year. During the visit, we’ll explore the castle’s main buildings and discuss the Honors of Scotland, the Stone of Destiny, as well as its rich history filled with wars, sieges, legends, and mysteries hidden within these ancient walls.
